A young girl has just died of fulminant pneumonia. Lying in the family living room, she can still see, hear, and feel. Men offer her impoverished parents money in exchange for her body and take it away. She then becomes the silent, yet lucid, witness to the various transformations imposed on her body in the name of science. Powerless, she recounts everything: the hospital, the dissection room, the medical students, the multiple procedures performed on her corpse… But when will her lucidity fade?
Written in the first person from the perspective of the deceased, "The Girl Tortured on a Shelf" is a short story by Japanese author Akira Yoshimura, published in 1959. This tale, steeped in magical realism, brilliantly illustrates how death affects people differently depending on their status. The author skillfully intertwines philosophical questions about human life with the concrete issues that shape it, such as social inequality, access to medical care, and the objectification of women's bodies. With her characteristic precision and sensitivity, Evelyne de la Chenelière has adapted this story for the stage, a tale where darkness and hope coexist.

Mario Cloutier, Revue JEU
"Driven by magnificent scenography and lighting, a captivating sound ambiance, the production is overall very accomplished." Luc Boulanger, La Presse
